My Wine Experience

I do not know very much about the different types of wines of where certain wines come from. I have tried reds, whites, and sparkling wines and have enjoyed some of each and been dissatisfied with others. When I was younger my parents would let me taste some every so often and I tended to enjoy the whites better than the reds because they were sweeter. Over time, I began to prefer reds because of their deeper tastes and ability to pair with lots of foods.

I wouldn't dare call myself a wine connoisseur but wines have always been in my life. Both of my parents are wine enthusiasts and drink it almost every night with dinner. During holidays, which we typically spend with extended family, my dad always supplies an assortment of wines that go well with the holiday dinner.  We tend to sit around the table talking for hours even after we finish eating. Everyone else is drinking wine so I usually join in but I certainly don't seem to enjoy it as much as everyone else. This is likely because I don't drink much wine outside of these special occasions and I would like that to change.

What I hope to get out of this class most is the ability to sit around the table with family or friends while understanding what I am drinking instead. I am very much look forward to going to wine tastings and feeling out what kind of wines I enjoy and what goes well with certain foods. An understanding of what I am drinking would add another dimension to eating and my social experiences.

I also want to be able to talk to my dad about wines because he enjoys them so much. He has a big collection of wines in the basement and he commonly ask me to go down and find a specific one and then he'll ask if I can tell where its from based on the name of the wine or the type of grape. I usually get it wrong and that is because my experiences with wines are so infrequent. My parents have never pushed me to be a wine drinker and I think that is because they want me to discover it on my own. I am looking forward to this class and the experiences it can provide for me.
